Statement on the Recent Political Situation in Thailand
For Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions Delegates
19th December 2008

On behalf of the Royal Thai Government, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau as the official organization to attract Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibition fully understand your concerns of the current situation in Bangkok.

We are pleased to inform you that Thailand now has a new government led by the 27th Prime Minister, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva. Mr. Abhisit said he will try to form a new cabinet by 19th December 2008 and will deliver his government's policy statement to parliament – a precondition to legalize its administrative power as required by the constitution– before the end of December. Mr. Abhisit also sought to restore confidence among foreign investors about the closure of Suvarnabhumi airport after it was occupied by protesters. Mr. Abhisit further declared, “We will make sure these are things of the past. They will never happen again and we welcome all of you as tourists, investors and partners.”

For issues concerning the MICE industry, Mr. Abhisit said that now he is working on the best time and place to hold the 14th ASEAN Summit, since the meeting expressed confidence and solidarity with Thailand as ASEAN chair and host of the Summit. Aligned with the press statement released by the Chairman of ASEAN on the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting ASEAN Secretariat on 15th December 2008, the summit will take place in Thailand before the end of February 2009.

All international and domestic airports and mass transportation such as the BTS skytrain, subway, and bus services are fully operational, and business goes on as usual. All MICE events in Thailand are proceeding according to schedule.  All MICE venues, hotels, public and private organizations are operating normally.

For TCEB, we will do our utmost to provide needed assistance to MICE visitors and make sure that you will find comfort in our genuine Thai hospitality and have an enjoyable time while you are here. With our full support, we are therefore very much looking forward to welcoming you and all participants joining MICE events in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand, and thank you for your continuing confidence in Thailand.
